THE ALL-PARTY PARLIAMENTARY
HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP (PHRG)
-
One of the most long-standing All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) – set up in 1976 by the late Lord Avebury – enabling UK Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum to work together to champion the international human rights framework;
-
Mandated to raise the profile of international human rights issues within Parliament and more widely; investigate and publicise human rights abuses occurring outside of the UK, with a focus on serious and systematic violations of civil and political rights; and support Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) worldwide;
-
A bridge-builder, convenor, facilitator, and resource, through its engagement with UK Government officials, foreign officials, international experts, other APPGs, NGOs, HRDs and victims and survivors of human rights abuses.

UK Parliamentarians support the work of the PHRG because:
The voices of courageous Human Rights Defenders striving towards more open and just societies need to be heard, in Parliament and by decision-makers.
Fabian Hamilton MP, PHRG Chair
Human rights must remain high on the UK Government’s and Parliament’s foreign policy agenda.
The Rt Hon The Lord Garnier KC, PHRG Officer

Its work often shines a light on those places in the world where serious and systematic violations persist but don't feature in the news.
The Rt Hon Dame Diana Johnson MP, former PHRG Chair

Of its dedication to the defence of democratic values and its champions, particularly in countries where they are often threatened.
The Rt Hon Sir Stephen Timms MP, former PHRG Officer

The oppressed, the persecuted, and the marginalised worldwide should be recognised, heard and supported.
Afzal Khan MP, former PHRG Officer

Extrajudicial killings, torture, arbitrary detention, the suffering of civilians in situations of armed conflict, and lack of justice for victims are still all too common in the world.
Anum Qaisar, former MP and PHRG Officer
